Visiting Santa Cruz This Past Summer
If you have not visited Santa Cruz, then there is no doubt you have heard a lot about it. I was right there a while back – just hearing a lot about the place; the beautiful sand beaches, the picturesque scenery, the numerous fun activities to do in the Californian city. So I made up my mind to spend a holiday there so that I could form my own opinion of the place.
In any case, I had been waging a fierce battle on excess weight and was using this weight loss method chart, and I thought that taking a holiday in a beautiful place would motivate me to win the war. Needless to say, my fight with weight loss wasn’t a great success, but the holiday destination choice sure was a worthy one. It is one of those rare decisions you make in life and find out that you get exactly what you bargained for, if not something better.
The Santa Cruz Experience
I am not the most active person, as my excess weight may already suggest, so it should come as no surprise that I preferred to laze in the beaches rather than engage in some sport or other. But I did enjoy watching other holiday makers play water sports vigorously. Surfers were beaming as they rode on wave after wave, just as swimmers did. Perhaps it was the satisfaction that was written all over the faces of the surfers that made me want to learn how to surf, because by the time I was leaving the city I had firmly resolved to become an expert at surfing.
Or perhaps it was a feeling of dissatisfaction that made me want to learn; feeling as though I was missing out on a lot. Anyway my firm resolution is yet to be executed. Perhaps the next time I visit Santa Cruz, because I’m certainly paying the place a second visit soon, my resolve will be reawakened and strengthened a bit.
But besides the long hours spent sun bathing, and the long walks through the beaches, I did manage to take some rather cool photographs of the beaches. The Natural Bridges State Beach is one of the beaches I simply had to take countless photographs. The natural bridge truly is picturesque. But if you want to take good photos, you should visit the beach late in the afternoons when it is not very crowded.
Well, if you prefer to let things happen to you rather than go make them happen, like me, then you will certainly enjoy dolphin and whale watching. Watching the gigantic creatures is a lovely experience. In fact, the experience may be even emotional for some. It is not uncommon to see people crying at the sight of the bottlenose dolphins going about their daily business completely unaware of the beautiful spectacle they create just by existing.
Those who love making every experience a learning experience will certainly find watching these beautiful creatures enjoyable. And even of more value to them will be the knowledge that flows from the experienced marine biologists and the ship captains as well.
Although I do not credit myself as being the most active person alive, I do nurse a soft spot for biking. I would be willing to spend a lifetime in Santa Cruz just so I can ride through the beautiful mountain biking trails in the city. A two to four hour ride through the Wilder Ranch State Park is nothing if not fulfilling. You get the feeling of being one with nature, because the landscape of the trail is as natural as can be. You also get to see lovely old cabins, and learn more about the trails from experienced biking guides.
Another attraction that made my visit to Santa Cruz truly worth the effort is a little place called the Mystery Spot. The spot is truly mysterious, as it is the one place where the laws of gravity simply don’t apply. Tourists get a real laugh from watching balls thrown up defying gravity by not coming down. The guides stationed at the spot are also really good at their job, and they ensure that you derive maximum enjoyment from this small place where the impossible become possible.
Visiting Santa Cruz is truly a good decision. The beauty and exquisiteness of the place is not overrated. Besides enjoying water sports in the beaches, and watching dolphins, whales and other fish deep in the waters, and even going mountain biking, there is wine tasting to be done, art galleries to be visited, nature walks to be taken and golf to be played. If that isn’t the description of a perfect holiday destination!
